A practical guide to choosing the right BMX race equipment — frame size, cranks, gearing, handlebars, and wheels. Developed by EVE — Elite Velocity Enterprises. Bookmark this page — you'll come back to it every time your rider grows or upgrades.
Frame Sizing
Choosing the Right Frame
BMX frame sizes are labeled by category — Mini, Junior, Expert, Pro — but actual dimensions vary between brands. Always check the real top tube measurement, not just the label. An Expert-size Meybo Holeshot (19.7") and an Expert-size Sunn Prince (19.3") are noticeably different on the track.
Don't size up. It's tempting to buy bigger so the rider can grow into it, but a frame that's too large is harder to handle and will hold your rider back. Fit for now, not for two years from now.
Category Rider Height Top Tube Length Wheel
Micro Mini 4'0" & Under (122 cm or less) 15.0" – 16.0" 20"
Mini 4'0" – 4'6" (122–142 cm) 16.0" – 17.0" 20"
Junior 4'4" – 4'10" (137–149 cm) 17.0" – 18.5" 20"
Expert 4'8" – 5'4" (147–163 cm) 18.5" – 19.5" 20"
Pro 5'4" – 5'10" (163–181 cm) 20.0" – 20.5" 20"
Pro XL or XXL 5'10" & Over (181 cm & over) 20.5" & Over 20"
Cruiser All sizes available Junior to Pro XXL 24"
Crank Sizing
Crank Length
Cranks that are too long cause the rider's hips to rock side to side while pedaling — making pedaling less efficient and harder to control. Pedaling should feel smooth and fast. Use this formula to find the ideal crank length:
Inseam (inches) ÷ 0.173 = Ideal crank length (mm)
Example: A rider with a 30" inseam → 30 ÷ 0.173 = 173mm → choose 170mm or 175mm. If still growing, go with the longer option.
  • Always measure inseam with racing shoes on for accuracy
  • Longer cranks give more power off the start but limit top cadence
  • If your rider is spinning out at high speed, try shorter cranks
  • Top elite riders typically use 170–175mm regardless of height
Gearing
Gear Inches by Class
Gearing should match your rider's strength, cadence ability, and style. Use the lowest (easiest) gear your rider can manage at high cadences without spinning out — this gives the fastest acceleration while still maintaining top-end speed.
ClassRecommended Gear InchesNotes
Micro45 – 47 giKeep it easy — cadence over power
Mini47 – 49 giLight gearing builds speed habits early
Junior49 – 52 giTransitional range as strength develops
Expert51 – 53 giStarting to approach adult range
Pro52 – 55 giTop adult riders typically 53–55 gi
Calculate your gear inches: Use the free calculator at bmxultra.com/gear-calculator — plug in your sprocket, rear cog, and wheel size to find your exact gear inches.
Handlebars
Bar Height & Width
Bar rise typically ranges from 3" to 8". The right choice depends on the rider's height and frame size. A well-sized bar transfers power more effectively through rhythm sections and helps the rider stay in an athletic position through corners.
  • Rider's hands should sit about shoulder-width apart on the grips
  • Bars that are too wide can be cut down — this is common practice
  • Some bars have maximum weight limits for smaller/lighter models — always check
  • Too much rise = less efficient power transfer off the gate
  • Too little rise = cramped position that limits control in corners
Rider Stance
Q-Factor & Foot Stance
Q-factor is the total width from the outside of one crank arm to the other. What matters is matching it to your rider's natural foot stance — shoulder-width apart. Too wide loses power; too narrow loses stability in corners.
  • Match stance to how the rider naturally stands — feet shoulder-width apart
  • Adjust using different combinations of bottom brackets, crank arms, and pedal spacers
  • Feet too far apart = power loss
  • Feet too close together = instability, especially in corners
Wheels & Tires
Wheel & Tire Selection
Do not use a tire that is too narrow for the rider's weight. Tires that are too thin won't offer enough support and can affect safety — especially during hard landings.
  • Challenge (standard) bikes use 20" wheels; Cruisers use 24" wheels
  • Heavier riders or aggressive jumpers should use a wider tire for better support
  • Not all tires labeled the same size are actually the same — check the ISO size
  • Fractional-sized tires (1-3/8") fit larger diameter rims than decimal tires (1.5") — even if they sound similar
  • Always verify ISO size to ensure proper fit before ordering

Brand Lineage & Evolution
Scot Enterprises SE Racing SE Bikes
Founded by BMX pioneer Scot Breithaupt. The PK Ripper became the longest-running and most famous BMX bike ever. Brand sold to Advanced Sports International (ASI) and renamed SE Bikes.
BMX Products Inc. Mongoose
Founded by Skip Hess. Created the legendary Motomag cast magnesium wheel — the first of its kind. Evolved from a racing powerhouse into a mass-market brand.
Western States Imports Centurion Diamondback
WSI originally imported Centurion road bikes before their BMX effort became the Diamondback name. Now primarily a lifestyle and mountain bike brand.
GT Acquired Robinson + Powerlite + Dyno
Gary Turner's GT became a BMX conglomerate in the 1990s. Many frames were identical bikes with different decals. Eventually passed to Schwinn, Pacific Cycle, Dorel, and Pon Holdings.
Torker Built original Haro frames
Before Haro became independent, the very first Haro freestyle frames were manufactured by Torker — a little-known but important piece of BMX history.
FMF / Flying Machine Factory Race Inc.
Many iconic FMF alloy frames were actually designed and built by Bill Bastian at Race Inc., leading to significant confusion in the vintage market to this day.
Yess BMX Hydrogen BMX Terminated
Canadian-made alloy frames. Yess wound down in 2021. Renny Husada relaunched as Hydrogen BMX in November 2022 with the same factory and DNA. Hydrogen was also terminated by early 2025.
Staats Ciari Parts
Staats was a dominant force in 2000s racing. Its design language eventually evolved into and merged with Ciari Parts under new ownership.
Kuwahara USA/Canada Regional Variants
The Kuwahara brand gained global fame via E.T. the movie. USA and Canada branches operated under separate licensing agreements, producing frame variations not available in Japan.
Sunn (1982) Max Commençal leaves Commencal BMX (2022)
Max Commençal founded Sunn as a BMX brand in 1982. He left in 1998. Four decades later he returned to BMX through Commencal, placing riders on the Olympic podium in just his second season back.
